Learn to block a mini hat in sinamay and decorate with a free form sculpted sinamay shape and sinamay trim. Create your own hand-made silk flowers to use as decoration and finish with a comb and elastic to secure. Each piece can have some variation to make them all individual, unique and truly yours! Basic hand sewing skills are required. All materials and equipment supplied.

Benefit from Judy’s experience as the “special occasion specialist” to ensure the hat is just right for you and your next special occasion, be it a wedding, races or investiture ceremony. Bespoke styles start from £350. Out of gallery If you live in London or are able to travel to London : 1. Initial consultation and design agreement Arrange an appointment for a relaxed consultation with Judy at Cockpit Arts, Holborn. Listening to your ideas and learning about the occasion you’re attending and your outfit. Judy will put you at ease and take the time to get to know you. If possible please bring your outfit along to the consultation. You’ll try on different hats for style and fit, and discuss colours and materials. Judy will suggest either an existing design uniquely tailored to you, or a totally new design. Once the main design elements are agreed, Judy will let you know of the price. If you are happy with the details and would like to go ahead, you would pay a deposit to confirm the order during this initial consultation. 2. Fitting appointment At your fitting appointment, you will discuss the completed look with Judy, and try on your hat to check that both sizing and fit are correct. 3. Completion appointment This is the exciting part where you come to collect your finished hat. If there are any minor adjustments to be made, Judy will endeavour to make those while you wait. Judy will take the balance payment at this stage. Your hat will come beautifully wrapped in its own hat box. If you live further afield in the UK, internationally or aren’t able to travel to London: 1. Initial contact Contact Judy via phone or e-mail for an initial conversation to discuss your idea, the occasion you’re attending, and your chosen outfit. Please e-mail Judy a photograph of yourself, wearing your outfit if possible, or a headshot. 2. Design agreement Judy will respond via email with styles expertly selected for you. You will also be able to adapt existing designs, to match the colour of your outfit, and textural designs to match. Once the main design elements are agreed, Judy will let you know of the price. If you are happy with the details and would like to go ahead, you would pay a deposit to confirm the order. 3. Hat completion and delivery Judy will be in touch when your hat is complete, by sending a photograph of the piece by email. If you're completely happy, you pay the balance of the order. Judy will dispatch your hat by Royal Mail, Special Delivery or Parcelforce. If you prefer to use a chosen courier please let Judy know. Your hat will come beautifully wrapped in its own hat box.

Judy Bentinck's clients attend events as diverse as royal garden parties, investitures, race days and weddings. Her hat designs are both creative and accessible, and with over 18 years' experience in creating special occasion headwear, Judy can provide expert advice and complement your chosen outfit for the day. Of a warm and caring nature, Judy will put you at ease to ensure your hat-buying experience is pleasant. Whether it's one of Judy's existing designs or a bespoke piece , she will work with you to ensure your hat is just right for you, and appropriate to the special occasion you are attending. From theatre costume design to couture millinery With a background in Textile design and an initial career in theatre costume design, Judy trained in the craft of millinery with Rose Cory, who was the Queen Mother's own milliner. With Rose she learned the secrets of traditional couture millinery, gaining an appreciation for true craftsmanship, well-balanced design and exquisite detailing. With this expertise, Judy established her eponymous brand at Cockpit Arts studios in central London, where she has built a loyal and ever-increasing following since 2002. Clients include celebrities such as Clare Balding, Amanda Redman, and Jenny Agutter and members of the aristocracy. Countess Bathurst was resplendent at her inauguration as High Sherriff of Gloucestershire. See her hat and other client testimonials here . Judy has also collaborated with fashion designers during London Fashion Week’s catwalk show, and PR companies to produce unique creations for Royal Ascot Ladies’ day. Judy's design inspiration is all-embracing from natural forms through floral motifs, architecture, historical references to mythical tales and mathematics. Passing on Judy's millinery expertise Judy teaches millinery skills at Central St Martin's University of the Arts London, and has recently demonstrated at the British Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Museum of London.
